…But I am not flexible…

The most common reason that I hear for not doing yoga is “I’m not flexible”.

Very few people are flexible–even if those people have practiced yoga for years.

Yoga isn’t about touching your toes.                                  It’s about what you learn on the way down.

Yoga is connecting movement with your breath.  If you are breathing and moving with intention, you are doing Yoga.  All those gurus from way back when (I am over simplifying the history of Yoga…) knew a thing or two.  If you can calm the mind through breathing and movement, you are able to work/pray/rest/deal with life (depends on the day) so much better.

Originally gurus practiced Yoga was so they could meditate–we all know how difficult it is to meditate, heck, it is difficult to find time to just sit still, much less think about nothing.  Why do I practice Yoga?  Here are a few of the MANY reasons for me:

Yoga allows me to “check out” for a bit.  When I am practicing Yoga, I am (usually) present in the moment.  Through years of practice, I am able to “leave the day” at the door and focus on the here and now.  Often times I am a bit scattered when I arrive at class–and by the end of class I feel like I have my life together..ha!

It feels good to breathe!  Yogis talk about breath-work all the time–but we never seem to explain it to anyone.  Simply focusing on your breath–taking note of the inhale (counting) and working to make your exhale of equal length.  This can lower your heart rate, and help you find a place of calm.  It helps me fall asleep–it has helped me on long trans-Atlantic flights.  Maybe you can try it now?  Take an inhale and count–1..2..3..4..5..6.. and exhale–1..2..3..4..5..6. Not so easy, right?  Try again.  Keep working with your breath.  When you slow down your exhale, you are focusing on your breath–and guess what?  That is breath-work–thats YOGA!

Let’s be honest, it feels good to move.  Note: Touching your toes is overrated.  In Yoga, there are so many modifications–there isn’t an excuse you can give me that you shouldn’t do yoga. Bad knees?  Let’s strengthen your hips (it helps!) . Sore shoulders? Let’s focus on strengthening your back and core.

I wonder if individuals don’t practice Yoga because they don’t understand what it is–or they only see all the “crazy yoga tricks” on YouTube and Instagram-and that can be very intimidating (it is to me, at least.)

Guess what?  I don’t teach that crazy stuff.  Starting this Thursday–9/5/19 and EVERY Thursday I am teaching Yoga at Oak Creek Fitness, in Oak Creek Wisconsin.  There are several teachers and several time slots available for Yoga.  My class is Thursdays from 6:30-7:45.  Come and see what it is all about.  Try it, you might LOVE it.
